Pokémon tcg Brilliant Stars - explanatory
Double Turbo Energy: what the buzz is about
Depending on the format of Pokémon tcg you play this article may be either insightful or totally redundant. The reason for this is the distinction between the Standard format and the Expanded format. In Pokémon TCG Online you can choose whether you want to play in the Standard format or in the Expanded format. The official Play! Pokémon Events only allow the Standard format. Double Turbo Energy is now allowed in the Standard format whereas Double Colorless Energy isn't.
Comparison
Double Turbo Energy provides 2 colorless Energy. Its downside is that the attacks of the Pokémon to which Double Turbo Energy is attached do 20 less damage. Double Colorless Energy doesn't have that disadvantage. The general rule is that only one Energy card can be attached to a Pokémon each turn, unless a card states otherwise.
This general rule is a pacing game mechanic which prevents the game from being decided in the first couple of turns. Double Colorless Energy was probably rotated out of the Standard format because it gave Pokémon which can take at least 2 colorless Energy too much of edge compared to other Pokémon. This is probably also the reason why Double Turbo Energy comes with a disadvantage, because game balance demands it.
Similar Energy cards were already introduced in the Rebel Clash and Battle Styles expansions.
Twin Energy only provides 2 Energy to Pokémon which are not Pokémon V or Pokémon GX. Rapid Strike Energy provides 2 Water Energy or Fighting Energy in any combination. It can only be attached to Rapid Strike Pokémon which is an important limitation for its use.
Strategic use of Double Turbo Energy: Battle Styles's Durant
One of the best use cases we've come across for Double Turbo Energy and Twin Energy is with Battle Styles's Durant. Its move Devour requires two Energy of any color. Since that move doesn't do any damage, the move isn't affected by the 20 less damage disadvantage.
If a player has many Durant's in play, the opponent can be carded out fairly quickly. Depending on the game Double Turbo Energy allows the player to start deploying this strategy one turn earlier than with Basic Energy cards, which might mean the difference between winning and losing.
A way to counter this tactic or even use to your advantage is to include the following cards in your deck:
Ordinary Rod
Roseanne's backup
Shauna
Klara
Another way is to play with Chilling Reign's Beedrill, because Double Turbo Energy is a Special Energy card which is an easy target for Beedrill's Persist Sting attack.
